10,000 Steps a Success!

What a fun month we had at Stroller Strides walking out 10,000 steps each day. It was a daily conversation piece in class and everyone who participated enjoyed pushing themselves to do just a little more.

The moms who are striving for postpartum fitness really found the walking improved their fitness levels and those striving for prenatal fitness commented on how much better they are feeling with the walking.

Congratulations to all the moms who walked across December with purpose and pride. You go girls!

10,000 Steps Challenge at Stroller Strides

The Little Black Dress Club has been going strong for 2 months now. Our Ab Intensive during October was fun and transformational. Our High Intensity Wednesdays in November really put us all to the test. Now for December we're kickin' it up a notch (as my friend Emeril likes to say) by taking part in a 10,000 Step Challenge.

The goal is to walk 10,000 steps each day in December. How far is 10,000 steps you ask? It's almost 5 miles. For those who complete the challenge we will walk approximately 155 miles this month. If this sound like a lot to you I think you'd be surprised at how many steps you take during the day, especially if you have kids!

Walking has numerous benefits and we fully intend to include our class time in the day's step count. One of the most important benefits for December is not only keeping up our fitness routines but also keeping our stress levels very very low.

This challenge is something that anyone can do. It's great for amping up your postpartum fitness routine, it's a very healthy way for pregnant moms to get some prenatal fitness into their day and it's wonderful for families to do together - come on Dads, join us!

If you would like to get in on the fun, please leave a comment below and you too can be included in our 10,000 Step Challenge. Let us know what your goals are for completing the challenge. Why do you want to take 10,000 steps each day this month?

Now go grab that pedometer, lace up those walking shoes and let's get moving!!

Making time for a workout at Stroller Strides

I have read several posts around the blogisphere lately that recommend different postpartum workouts for moms without much time. Ha! What mom has any time? I certainly don't and it's even worse with a new baby I know. There's nothing like trying to fit in a workout and a shower in between feedings right?

But instead of trying to find the quickest way to sweat a little I would encourage new moms to MAKE time for a workout. Of course I recommend Stroller Strides. The hour you spend at a class has far more benefits than just causing you to sweat. The social interaction with other adults is good for the soul. To laugh and joke and sing silly songs with other moms who are in your same boat will make all the difference in your day.

The quality focused time you get to spend with your child is priceless, especially when you return home to a sea of laundry, mountain of bills and jungle of groceries. There is nothing like spending set time eye to eye with the little miracle who is your child.

The friendships that your child will make may last a lifetime. To instill the values of health, fun and friendship from the very beginning of their life is invaluable and the memories will last forever.

I have heard some great instructors say that you give your family 23 hours of your day. Why not take just one hour to focus on you. I agree. Get rejuvenated, strong and healthy so that those other hours really count.

Childhood is fast and fleeting. If you want to make the most of it not only for your child but also for yourself then set aside time each week to focus on being your best. Find some other moms to make the journey fun and get STRIDING!

The Holiday Push Is On @ Stroller Strides

What a great play on words eh? The PUSH really is on at Stroller Strides of Bend. We've got a great group of moms who are meeting every week to PUSH their strollers, PUSH themselves and their fitness limits as we PUSH full steam ahead into the holidays.

The Little Black Dress Club is a big hit! We spent the month of October working out our abs in our Ab Intensive sessions and everybody graduated from wall sits to planks in our month-long challenge. Way to go girls! You are so AWESOME!

This month, as we look forward to turkey, stuffing and pie we're also looking forward to keeping up our momentum with High Intensity Wednesdays and some killa workouts that will make us all sweat. I'm excited. How about you?

This month's most important tip is hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Water is a very important part of a healthy balanced lifestyle. During the holidays, or any busy time for that matter, it is important to be very deliberate about drinking enough water. Not only does it keep all of our body systems functioning properly, it is also essential for mental performance. And what mom do you know who can afford to lose any mental sharpness?

So make sure you keep those water bottles filled ladies. Go buy yourself an early Christmas present of a pretty new bottle that you can keep with you at all times. Don't let yourself get dehydrated running errands, cooking in the kitchen, baking, shopping or entertaining friends and family. Take care of your body and you'll coast through the holiday madness!

As we head into the last week of October and move into November it's exciting to see all the moms getting stronger, feeling healthy and moving forward with positive attitudes. I am looking forward to a great holiday season with you all. Thanks for showing up to class each day and working so hard. You are really inspiring!

The Little Black Dress Club is in full swing at Stroller Strides

WOW! What a week. We started the Little Black Dress Club at Stroller Strides this week and I am so proud of all the moms participating. They really stepped up to the challenge with our Ab Intensive sessions. I heard some grumbling about sore abs - woo woo. We also had several graduates, in the first week, from wall sits to planks in our Challenge session.

Congrats to Bonnie, Kim & Pippin! Double congrats to our plank challenge mamas who are making great strides in their times. Megan, Melissa & Shellie are improving by leaps and bounds in holding their planks. Way to go girls!

Thanks to Megan who suggested we play the same song every time we do our challenge in class so everyone can see how far they are getting by the gauging their progress against the song. We are definitely bringing "Sexy Back"!!!

What a great bunch of gals. I'm so proud of their hard work and dedication to making changes in their outlook and their bodies - just in time for Little Black Dress season.

Merry Christmas to us!

Little Black Dress Club

The holidays are just around the corner. Before you know it the invitations will start arriving for parties and dinners. Are you ready to don your Little Black Dress?

To be totally prepared this year at Stroller Strides we're starting up the Little Black Dress Club. This club will be active from now until the end of the year. All you have to do is set your goal and participate in the club events.

Goal: Your goal can be anything you want it to be. Ideally it would be a dress, picture of a dress or size you want to fit into. But there are no limits so strive away!

Club: For the month of October I will be offering an Ab Intensive. We will have our regular class but at the end we will do stretching then abs for an additional 15 minutes. You are free to leave at anytime but if you really want to work your core then you won't want to miss this extra time.

Wall sit / Plank Challenge: During October I will be hosting a wall sit or plank challenge. Pick your nemesis and conquer it. We will take 5 minutes at each class to work on your choice. The goal is to be able to do one of these for 5 minutes without resting. Push yourself and join in the fun!

I will also keep offering our Butte Climb class. However, so that I can spend some quality time with my kids I am moving the class to Friday's at 10 am (see NOTE for exceptions.) This will be weather permitting.
NOTE: We will walk the butte at 10 am on Friday, Oct. 3, 10, 17 & 31. We will also walk on Tuesday, Oct. 21 and NOT on Friday, Oct. 24 because I have a prior commitment that day.

Don't miss this opportunity to shine this holiday season. You can do this!

The Perfect Smoothie - Stroller Strides Style!

At Stroller Strides we often talk in our class about recipes, favorite snacks, food for our kids and how to be healthy.

We all agree that getting to class in the morning can be a challenge, especially for moms with multiple children. Here is a great way to get your mommy nutrition and be fueled up for class:

The Perfect Smoothie!

1/2 cup berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries - can be fresh or frozen)

1 small banana, peeled

2/3 cup unsweetened pineapple juice, chilled (OJ also works)

1/2 cup ice

2 Tbsp. low-fat plain yogurt (I like vanilla too)

3 tsp. wheat germ or flax seed meal

Optional:

1 tsp. honey

1 scoop protein powder (I always add this!)

Put ingredients in a blender and process until smooth. YUMMY!

What's your favorite way to fuel up?

Love Fries? Try this one for a healthy alternative

We at Stroller Strides of Bend love fries. But it's hard to justify a large order of fries after a great climb up Pilot Butte or a killer arm workout. So, here's a healthy alternative that everyone can enjoy. It's especially great this time of year when you or your neighbors might be swimming in zucchini.

Bon Appetit!

ZUCCHINI FRIES

Preheat Oven to 425

Cut zucchini into 3 inch sticks.

Whisk an egg white and 1/4 cup milk

Combine 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan and 1/2 cup seasoned breadcrumbs

Dip zucchini sticks in egg mixture then roll in breadcrumb mixture.

Coat a baking sheet w/ cooking spray and place zucchini on sheet

Bake for 25 - 30 min or until golden brown. Makes about 32 fries

Stroller Strides - It's better than a bag of rice

I came across a blog the other day for a guy whose wife recently had a baby. He is also a personal trainer. In it he lamented at the "massive deficit in the fitness programs being given to post-partum and pregnant mothers right now."

HEL-LO? I'm not even going to go there. Anyway, he had a video on his blog showing what he calls "5 truly functional movements a mother must have in order to take care of her kids."

So I decided to take a look at his "functional movements." To be honest I couldn't finish watching it I was laughing so hard. In it he tells women to get a bag of rice - to represent the baby - and use it in all their movements.

Now I'm sure these are great exercises and to be honest the ones I saw are very familiar to me as a Stroller Strides instructor. But seriously! I'd much rather work out with the moms in my class and my kids than hang out alone in my living room with a bag of rice. So, for my money I'd say Stroller Strides is a much better deal than a 10 pound bag of rice from Costco (do they even sell a bag that small at Costco?)

Then it got even funnier. As I went to write this blog I was searching for pictures of bags of rice on google and came across this gem:

This picture was on a blog called Daddytypes.com. Here is the accompanying story:

To celebrate the birth of a baby in a way that makes it feel like the kid's right there in your arms, a rice shop in the southwestern Japanese city of Kita-Kyushu will send out a customized dakigokochi, a roughly baby-shaped bag of high-grade rice to everyone on your birth announcement list. The bag will be printed with the kid's picture, stats, and a greeting--and it will weigh the same as the kid did at birth.

A few final thoughts here:

1. Should I forward this information to Mr. Personal "Rice Bag" Trainer?

2. Beware Denver of Mr. Personal "Rice Bag" Trainer. He may try to lure your moms away with promises of "functional movements."

3. Do you think I can order a bag the size of a man with a picture of Brad Pitt on it?

Just wondering.

Facing Fall Head On at Stroller Strides

If you stepped outside on the High Desert today you were faced with reality. Fall is here. Summer is on her way out. Now I know she may go slowly over the next few weeks, but there is no denying that fall is ready to take her place. This is bittersweet to me because I LOVE fall, but I'm not quite ready to relinquish my summer.

Since we had virtually no spring I am sad to see the warm weather go. With busy little kids this is even more difficult because gone are the morning of sending them outside to play on the swing set in their jammies. Now we have to kit up with pants, socks, sweatshirts and soon snowsuits and mittens. Ahhhhhh, summer don't go! I'm not quite ready to be cooped up in the house with two balls pure energy.

However, there are some bright spots to be seen, especially at Stroller Strides. For the month of September we are going to milk the weather for all it's worth. One way we'll do that is by adding Tuesdays to our line-up of classes. Every Tuesday in September we will be meeting at Pilot Butte State Park to do a butte climb class. We will be walking up the butte with our babies, doing a mini-workout at the top and coming back down.

I'm very excited to add this class to our already great class schedule because it will mix things up a little bit. Adding hills to your regular walking routine triples your calorie burn. With the holidays just around the corner and Little Black Dress season coming fast why not be ready? Why not make this your year to shine! I think this class will really jump start our workouts and we'll all be Little Black Dress ready come November.

If you'd like to join us for our butte climb classes or want to know more about Stroller Strides, please visit us at: www.strollerstrides.net/bend

Healthy Eating Options from Stroller Strides

Our faithful Stroller Strides moms are finishing up their month-long MomOlympics challenge. Last week's special challenge was to submit a healthy recipe for the rest of the group.

Here are a couple tasty options. Why not try one tonight!

From Kathy P:

BALSAMIC & ROSEMARY GRILLED SALMON

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 (4 ounce) salmon fillets
  • sea salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary, minced

DIRECTIONS

  1. Season salmon fillets to taste with sea salt, and place into a shallow, glass dish. Whisk together vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and rosemary; pour over salmon fillets. Cover, and refrigerate at least 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat, and lightly oil grate.
  3. Remove salmon from marinade, and shake off excess. Discard remaining marinade. Cook on preheated grill until fish is opaque in the center and flakes easily with a fork, about 4 minutes per side.

From Megan G:

Marinated tomato-garlic shrimp

INGREDIENTS

* 3 cloves garlic, minced
* 1/3 cup olive oil
* 1/4 cup tomato paste
* 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
* 1 tablespoon white sugar
* 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil or dried
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes
* 2 pounds fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined

DIRECTIONS

* In a large bowl, stir together the garlic, olive oil, tomato paste,
sugar and red wine vinegar. Season with basil, salt, and cayenne pepper.
Add shrimp to the bowl, and stir until evenly coated. Cover, and refrigerate
for 30 minutes to 1 hour, stirring once or twice.
* Preheat grill for medium heat. Thread shrimp onto skewers, piercing once
near the tail and once near the head. Discard marinade.
* Lightly oil grill grate. Cook shrimp on preheated grill for 2 to 3 minutes
per side, or until opaque. OR… In the winter I just put it all in a baking dish
instead of grilling it. Bake at 350 for about 15 minutes. The sauce is fantastic
over brown rice!

I tried this tomato-garlic shrimp recipe and substituted chicken for the shrimp and basil / garlic tomatoes for the tomato paste and baked it in the oven for about 40 min. It was deelish!! You could make this really fast with a roasted chicken too. Just throw all the meat in with the sauce and bake for 10-15 minutes. Serve over rice.

From Kim D:

Zucchini Casserole

INGREDIENTS

6 cups sliced zucchini
1/2 cup diced onion
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 cup sour cream (I use light)
1 cup shredded carrots
1 pkg stuffing mix (stove-top)
1/2 cup melted butter (I use less better and had hot water)

DIRECTIONS

Boil zucchini and onion in salted water for 5 minutes. Drain. Combine soup, sour cream, and carrots. Fold into zucchini and onions. Combine butter (water) and stuffing mix. Cover bottom of 9x13 baking dish with 1/2 of stuffing. Add zucchini mixture. Top with remaining stuffing. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

I hope this gives you some great ideas for tonight's meal. Bon Appetit!

Stroller Strides Word of the Week: CONSISTENCY

Our STROLLER STRIDES group is in the middle of the MomOlympics. We've been keeping score, doing weekly challenges and last week we had a great time during our circuit workout using "non-traditional" workout toys during class. You can do a lot with a swim noodle!!

Last week's challenge was to make a goal collage and to come up with one word that describes your current or short term goals. It was fun to get everybody's words.

The word I chose for this week is CONSISTENCY. The moms who are consistently working out in our classes are really starting to see results. As a fitness provider I am working hard to provide CONSISTENT quality for my clients.

I am also working hard to provide an atmosphere that is open and encouraging for all the moms who participate. I like seeing the moms on class days and providing them with something that is CONSISTENT in their lives. They may not get the floor mopped or the laundry done, but they sure get their workouts in during the week.

The CONSISTENCY we've had up until this point has really paid off this summer. We've added some great moms and kids to our group and are seeing wonderful growth. It's fun to see the word spread!

If you are looking for something CONSISTENT in your life, give STROLLER STRIDES a try. There are over 700 class locations to chose from around the country. Working out with other moms is like nothing else and you will love the difference CONSISTENT physical activity will make in your life.

See you in class!

Postpartum Fitness through Stroller Strides

I read a lot of articles about postpartum fitness and it's role in helping new moms stave off depression. There is some great information out there and some very "interesting" information as well.

As a fitness instructor and Stroller Strides program provider I can personally attest to the wonderful benefits of getting your body moving after having a baby. Even many months after having a baby the challenges of motherhood can be overwhelming. But time after time I can see and feel my mind and body react to being outside, doing physical exercise and being in the presence of other moms.

I can see it in the faces of the moms in my classes too. They may arrive at class dragging from too little sleep or tense from life's stresses. After an hour of working out, laughing, singing and commiserating with each other they are visibly happier, more awake, walk lighter on their feet, hold themselves differently and exude joy.

I love being a part of this transformation. Stroller Strides really does make a marked difference in the lives of moms. It's not just moving body parts back into their pre-baby position, it's embracing a new season of life and practicing joy while doing it.

If you feel like your postpartum fitness routine could use some energizing (or if you just want to start doing something period) then join the moms of Stroller Strides around the nation who are investing in themselves and getting big returns both physically and mentally. You owe it to yourself and your baby to be your best. Stroller Strides is here to help.

See you in class!

Moms See Results At Stroller Strides

There is nothing I love more than hearing the success stories of my moms at Stroller Strides.

Last Thursday, in the afternoon, I got a great email from one of the moms saying she could hardly walk up her stairs because she was so sore. I LOVE that.

Like I always tell my moms "I'm here to HELP!" I don't know if they believe me.

I also love the story of another mom who recently went to the movies with her husband. Behind the theater is a very steep set of stairs to a parking lot. As she was bounding up the stairs her husband was imploring her to slow down. It's a great testimony to her success as she gets stronger and stronger each week and we can all see the difference.

There is nothing like being able to celebrate the successes of the moms who attend our classes. It's fun to see them excited about the changes they are seeing and to see their confidence levels soar as they improve their strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health.

We've had some great results this summer in our group and I'm excited to see what the next couple of months bring to these dedicated moms.

Way to go girls!!!

Beating the gas prices at Stroller Strides

Gas is ridiculous in my town right now. Probably in yours too. My dad recently came for a visit and said that in Colorado he is paying $3.85 for a gallon while I am paying $4.25. That's a pretty significant difference. I don't understand how it all works - how a place in the middle of the country pays less than a place on the coast. It's all Greek to me.

But to beat the insanity that is now my reality I've started riding my bike to Stroller Strides. Here's a picture of my set up.

It's called an Xtracycle and it's my regular bike with an extension on the back that allows me to carry my Stroller Strides bag with all my gear and then attach a trailer for my kids. The trailer turns into a stroller so we use that for class.

Unfortunately it's all uphill from my house to class, but it definitely warms me up. And, then I get the reward of going downhill home. It's pretty sweet.

Well, I hope you are finding ways to beat the craziness at the pump. I doubt it will get any better soon. But why not be happy in spite of the gloom? This bike makes me very, very happy!

Out of Town Stroller Strides Visitors

We had some out of town visitors today in our Stroller Strides class. It was a total blast to have S & T from Portland join us for our workout. The breezes were finally blowing and we had a fun class with water balloons. It's always fun to meet other Stroller Striders so we were glad for the visitors.

If you missed our LUNA Moms Club after class we had a great time with water guns, balloons, the parachute and other fun. It was a perfect day!

Enjoy the weekend!!

New Moms Rock at Stroller Strides!

I met a great group of new moms last week during our FREE Preview Week. It was such an honor to work out with them. They were so understanding of my "condition". Namely, my sprained ankle. There's really no good story other than I stepped on a baked potato sized rock in my own driveway, turned my ankle, heard that wonderful "POP" and went down. Ugh! Just a really bad sprain but I only learned that after I passed out 3 times and took a little trip to ER. Super.

But enough about me, the moms that came to class last week were really fantastic. They worked hard, enjoyed being outside, had beautiful children and got a taste of what Stroller Strides is all about. It was very fun to share the experience with them.

I loved meeting them all and I look forward to working out with them even more!

Stroller Strides Keeps Me Sane

There is a lot of hubbub in the world today. The economy has definitely seen better days, gas is through the roof, jobs are scarce, housing prices are wacky and a loaf of bread costs a lot more than it used to. It feels like riding on a merry-go-round that is going about 100 mph. We're all just holding on for dear life.

But while all these things are swirling around me there is a constant in my life that keeps me sane. Stroller Strides. My classes are small but I've got some great women who are also on this journey we call motherhood. It's such a joy to go to class each day and work out with them, talk to them and laugh with them. We're in this together and that makes all the difference.

Getting outside and exercising has made such an impact on my life. Walking, eating healthy, getting outside and moving helps keep my mind focused. It helps keep my moods more even keeled. It makes me a better wife and a better mom.

When the world gets crazy it's easy to insulate yourself away from it all. It's tempting to stay inside and avoid what's going on "out there." But the routine of exercising, the activity of getting my heart rate up, the camaraderie of being with the other moms - it really keeps me grounded. (not to mention I get great cost saving recipes, find out who's has the best price for milk this week and I have learned some great money saving tips from my Stroller Strides friends.)

So, if you're feeling like you're on the 100 mph merry-go-round too - keep holding on, but take some time to do something good for yourself. Get outside, go for a walk, join a Stroller Strides class, make an effort to find ways to keep yourself grounded and sane. For me it just happens to be when I'm walking around Pilot Butte with other moms pushing the loves of my life and laughing my head off as we recall our kid's antics over the weekend.

Ahh, there's nothin' better. Bring it on world!

Why I Love My Dad

This is my dad (with my son K2). Big JD. He really is big. 6 foot 4, 275, hands that can palm a basketball. He's tough. He once put a chain saw on his knee and didn't know it - it was running at the time. He's loud. He used to be a coach and if he wants your attention he can get it - No Problem. But more than that he's a big, giant, squishy, lovable teddy bear. Everybody comes to him with their problems. Everybody comes to him for advice. Everybody comes to him when they don't know what do to, (or they need help moving.) And he is ALWAYS there.

When I was a kid my dad gave up his business, his livelihood and his friends so that he could keep me and my brother. He mowed lawns, built fences, coached, taught 4th grade. He did whatever it took to put food on the table for us, keep a roof over our heads, clothe us. And he was always there. He drove me to Girl Scouts, softball, diving practice, the DMV to get my permit (then he made me drive home on an L.A. freeway in a truck with a stick shift that I didn't know how to drive, but that's another story.) He gave me the birds and bees talk using a Reader's Digest article. He even bought a pair of size 13 roller skates (those sweet tennis shoe ones) so he could skate with my brother and me on the weekends.

When I was in high school he would come to my school every Thursday and bring me lunch. I would sneak off my closed campus and we'd spend lunchtime together, talking, dreaming, learning from one another. We had a standing date every week.

In college he would call me on the phone and we'd catch up, talk about books I was reading and I'd lament about my lack of a love life.

After college helped me move to my first place, supported me when I went to Europe to "study" and ski and then again as I crossed the U.S. for grad school. His job involved travel and he always made sure that his territories included the state I was living in.

My dad isn't perfect. He can be embarrassing. He tries to barter with the check-out ladies at Wal-Mart to get a better deal. He uses his age, weight, crossed eye to guilt people into giving him free stuff - but always with a big goofy grin on his face. He doesn't quite understand meaning of subtle and he is still getting used to living in the 21st century. His fingers are too big for the little numbers on cell phones and computer keyboards. But he's an absolute wizard with the TV remote.

When I decided to start my Stroller Strides business he was totally supportive. He always asks about my classes and is genuinely interested in hearing how things are going. Today when he travels he takes a few days to come across the mountains from his business in the valley to visit with our family, play with our kids and see how we're doing in person. We still talk on the phone regularly about books, TV shows and the final minutes of football games.

I married a man very much like my father. Big and imposing, smart and tough, but also gentle, caring, compassionate and quick to lend a helping hand. I suspect my son will have many of these same qualities as he grows to be a man. (Click the photo and you'll see he is already taking after his papa.)

So on this upcoming Father's Day I'd just like to say - for all the world to read - I love you dad. Thanks for being you and for loving me.

Stroller Strides fits the bill for women's health

The most recent issue of HEALTH magazine offers an article by Lambeth Hochwald that states that walking boosts your mood, improves your memory, lowers your risk of disease and helps you to stay fit.

Well of course it does. We all know that walking is an important link to better health. So why don't we do it more often. How hard can it be?

Well, if you have little ones, then you know the struggles we face, as moms, to get out the door to go walking. Here are a few of the challenges:
  • loading the stroller (how does this thing fold up again?)
  • kids dressed
  • toys
  • snacks
  • drinks
  • dry pants
  • shoes (I know I have some tennis shoes somewhere under this pile of flip flops)
  • shorts that fit (yeah right!)
  • t-shirt (can I borrow one from my husband?)
  • jacket / sweatshirt (the throw-up stain isn't that noticeable is it?)
  • car keys / house keys
And that's just the list to get out the door; Let alone take the walk, keep the little one(s) happy, break a sweat and avoid getting lost in your own neighborhood because you have mommy brain.

But the fact of the matter is that walking does help and it has wonderful side effects. According to Hochwald's article, walking is "great for the heart, cut's breast cancer risks, helps you sleep, cuts down on aches and pains, makes you happy, keeps you slimmer, staves off senior / mommy moments & protects your bones." With benefits like this it would be crazy not to walk a little more each week.

Stroller Strides fits this bill perfectly. All you have to do show up. Let us take care of the rest. As you walk your way to better health we entertain your little one(s), never notice your stained sweatshirt, keep you from getting lost, support you with conversation, laughter and multiple shoulders to cry on, instruct you on great exercises to get you back into your skinny jeans / shorts and most importantly walk with you!

We're here for YOU and want to see you succeed as a mom and as a woman. We value your health and we want to help you be as fit and healthy as possible. So don't wait another day to start walking. If you can get to the park, we'll help you do the rest, and can guarantee you'll want to be with us everyday.

See you there!

Stroller Strides @ Turning Path LLC

I had a wonderful time with the beautiful moms at Turning Path LLC yesterday. The Mommy Mornings groups were so welcoming and kind. I really enjoyed talking with them and getting to see the moms interacting with their babies. It was really fun.

We talked about fitness, exercises they can do at home and the importance of modeling a healthy lifestyle for their children.

Anne Carlson is doing a great job over there. What a great asset to our community. I'm so happy they are in town and doing such a great service for our local moms.

I look forward to talking to them again soon and seeing how all the babies are growing!!

Stroller Strides founding mother Lisa Druxman was honored this evening on the Teleflora American's Favorite Mom television show with Donny and Marie. It was a wonderful tribute to moms across the country who do amazing things everyday and are dedicated to raising kids too.

She was filled with grace and poise as she represented mommypreneurs around the country on the Today show. What a wonderful example of motherhood, fitness, health and beauty - both inside and out.

Way to go Lisa! Thank you for your dedication, determination and role modeling to moms everywhere.

Creating Community - Stroller Strides Style

I was reading a mystery novel the other day and in it the detective was talking about using blogs, Google searches and chat rooms to help him solve his case. Gone are the days of having limited resources to find out information and research suspects. If you've said it, done it, written it or taken a picture of it be prepared to have "it" find it's way to the internet. Crazy!

In the same way there has never been a time like this when we can strike up virtual friendships with people thousands of miles away and feel like they're right next door. Suddenly community is not just your neighborhood or your town. It's at the end of our fingertips, right on the screen in front of us.

Stroller Strides and LUNA Moms Club are both wonderful local communities of women who are experiencing similar life stages - babies & kids! But sometimes it is scary to try to crack into a group of women who knows each other, who has a history together. Luckily, we have the internet to help us.

Resources such as meetup.com and cafemom.com are great ways to connect with others before you ever show up for an Stroller Strides class or LUNA Moms Club event. By joining one of these groups, or one similar, you can talk to other members, develop relationships and learn more about each other all in the privacy and security of your own home. There's no risk.

Hopefully, once you feel secure, like you "know" someone else or even a group of people, the natural progression is to go out and meet them in person. What could be better?

I love having these types of tools. I love being a part of a community of women who are all doing life together and who can meet and chat and laugh together both virtually and in reality. I may never crack a big mystery or catch a suspect, but I am meeting wonderful women who are moms, wifes, girlfriends and daughters. Together we are sharing experiences and becoming a community of strong, healthy moms who support one another and are available for each other all the time. That, to me, is the essence of community - Stroller Strides style.

Stroller Strides Leads the Way @ the March for Babies Walk

We had a blast this morning at the March of Dimes March for Babies Walk. The weather was GORGEOUS and we started the morning out in true Stroller Strides fashion with a rousing warm up.

Somehow we all missed a turn and went backwards on the course, but it was fun and everyone enjoyed the extra walking because it was so nice outside.

We are looking forward to doing the walk again next year and raising even more money for the March of Dimes.

Hope you can join us!!

Here are some of our walkers after the March for Babies!

Stroller Striding to better health and happiness!

Being a mom has its definite challenges. Looking out the window and seeing your kid eat a fist full of sand. Hearing screaming from in the other room and finding one kid sitting on the other kid's head. Having your kid draw a mustache on her lip (and only half-a-one at that) because she wants to be like daddy.

All these things can really raise your stress levels. But I'm finding that my moods are so much more even keeled because I'm working out, staying healthy and I have an outlet for my frustrations as well as a wonderful group of women with whom to share my successes.

Stroller Strides is making that difference for me and for the other moms in our classes. It's so fun to do stroller squats and bust out laughing because of something a kid said or did. It's also comforting to share the hurts and challenges with one another. As we support each other we get support in return. How cool is that?

I just ate a burger for dinner with my husband and kids, but I also had a great workout today and I feel good about my body and my life. Times are tough for everyone it's true, but Stroller Strides is really a grounding force in my life and I hope in the lives of the moms in our classes.

I'm so grateful for Stroller Strides. And tomorrow's workout will be much needed (remember the burger?) but also much appreciated as we squat and laugh our way to better health together.

Our Bodies Are Seeing Results!

We've been having so much fun in class lately. Tank Top Thursdays have been a real hit and we've all be talking about how we're starting to see results. Even our husbands are starting to comment. This is GREAT!

The wonderful thing about Stroller Strides is that it is the consistency that really makes the difference and it is so fun to celebrate these accomplishments together!

Thanks to all the great moms who are putting in the effort to be healthy and model healthy habits to their kids. You rock!

Just like mommy!

As a kid I remember my mom going to the gym. It had these huge machines with pulleys and straps and wheels. They even had the machine with the big strap that she would put around her leg or bum and it would jiggle. I remember they were all pink. That was about the extent of my fitness role modeling from my mom. She was 6'2" but never played basketball or volleyball - girls just didn't do that in Texas in the 50s - even the tall ones. Instead they took homemaking classes and played the piano.

Well times have changed as you well know. I was in middle school when Jane Fonda revolutionized fitness in America. In college I had a Cher step video that I loved! Fitness has definitely evolved.

So today when I was doing my personal workout (my non-Stroller Strides workout) it was so cool to see my kids who are only 1 and 2 stand in the living room next to me raising their hands, doing their squats and tapping it out. They come to class with me every day and they already know how to count it down, do baby pulses and "take a walk." They see me and the other moms in our class really working out, not just socializing. They see us sweat and they already understand the idea of good health and fitness.

This is one of the most positive things about what I do and why I'm so grateful that I found Stroller Strides. I'm also grateful for the other moms who join me each week to not only get into shape, but to model a healthy lifestyle to our children. Healthy habits started now will last a lifetime. So cool!

I must say that my mom is now quite the walker and an accomplished swimmer. I'm looking forward to the day when my kids take off on their own in sports and other athletic pleasures and will be able to say that they've been working out since they were born - because it will be the truth!

Mommy Couldn't Finish Dessert!

Yummmmmmy! We had a great time at our Moms Night Out event on Friday night. It was so awesome to be out having adult conversation. While most of it was about our kids, it was still fun to sit and laugh and chat and ask each other questions.

Our desserts were to die for. The Blacksmith definitely has some great offerings in the post dinner department. A big shout out to them for making our evening so great. My brownie sundae was so rich I couldn't finish it. Yum!

We spent over 3 hours just shootin' the breeze and it was AWESOME!

If you missed it, please join us next month. It will be great, as usual.

Party on girls!
